Cambridge Bay - ᐃᖃᓗᒃᑑᑦᑎᐊᖅ

The Hamlet of Cambridge Bay serves as the administration and transportation hub for the Kitikmeot region. It is located on the southeastern coast of Victoria Island, situated between Queen Maud Gulf and Dease Strait. The community’s hunting and fishing includes Bathurst Inlet, southeast Victoria Island, Queen Maud Gulf, Victoria Strait, and Coronation Sound. Important species for both food and income include arctic char, seals, geese, caribou, and muskoxen.

The CRN research team visited the community in February 2019. Team members held participatory mapping workshops with the Hunters and Trappers Association, Hamlet staff, Elders, and other resource users, collecting observations on coastal health and changing coastal conditions. Participants provided all data illustrated on this map.

Coastal issues included: erosion and landslides, and limited anchorage for cruise ships and pleasure crafts. An increase of boats and float planes in some areas has limited community access to fishing sites where gill nets are used.

Community coastal restoration priorities included: improvements to existing culverts to enhance water flow in some areas, which will reduce changes in fish behaviour. Other action items called for regular garbage and gill net clean-ups.
