Gjoa Haven - ᐅᖅᓱᖅᑑᖅ

Gjoa Haven is located on the southeast coast of King William Island. While there is participation in a wage economy, hunting and fishing are still very important economically. The community’s hunting and fishing area includes 100 km from Gjoa Haven in all directions, and extends into Rasmussen Basin, Chantrey Inlet, and Simpson Strait. The Northwest Passage Territorial Park is located at Gjoa Haven, on King William Island.

The CRN research team visited the community in February 2019. Team members held participatory mapping workshops with the Hunters and Trappers Association, Hamlet staff, Elders, and other resource users, collecting observations on coastal health and changing coastal conditions. Participants provided all data illustrated on this map.

Community restoration priorities included: the restoration of access areas for key fishing and the remediation of contaminated areas- which is a concern as some sites require increased and ongoing monitoring of contaminants and others require the physical removal of old gill nets.
