Kugaaruk - ᑰᒑᕐᔪᒃ

Kugaaruk is located on the southwest shore of the Simpson Peninsula, on the east side of Pelly Bay. Many residents support themselves by hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering. Community members also participate in wage-based economic activities. Important coastal resources in the Kugaaruk region include bowhead whales, narwhals, seals, polar bears, and arctic char. The community’s hunting and fishing area includes Pelly Bay, Boothia Peninsula, Committee Bay, Rae Strait, and the Gulf of Boothia.

The CRN research team visited the community in March 2019. Team members held participatory mapping workshops with the Hunters and Trappers Association, Hamlet staff, Elders, and other resource users, collecting observations on coastal health and changing coastal conditions. Participants provided all data illustrated on this map.

Community restoration priorities included: the restoration of key fishing rivers and monitoring of water and fish health as water levels are too low, and rivers are drying. Remediation of water bodies and new infrastructure will be required. Observed changes in water quality and fish health in some areas have been noted for a while. A community-led water quality and fish health monitoring programs should also be implemented.
